Becoming Women
2026-ongoingGrowing up, I absorbed countless instructions about what a woman should look like, how she should behave, and what kind of body she should inhabit. Some came from family, some from images, and many were contradictory. Repeated often enough, they began to feel less like instructions than something already inside the body.
Becoming Women began as an attempt to look at those voices from a distance. Through staged selt-portraiture, I use balloons, bras, wigs, clothing and high heels to construct, enlarge and rehearse different images of femininity.
As the actions repeat, the construction becomes unstable. Balloons multiply, bodies overlap, posture turns awkward, and objects begin to outlive the performance. What first appears light or artificial requires breath, force, adjustment and maintenance.
I am interested in this labour of becoming: the continual effort to assemble a recognisable woman, and the moment when the image begins to obscure the person atempting to inhabit.
New work is added as the project develops.
